What can we do to improve conditions in the River Thames
campaigning for clean & safe waters
Significant investment is needed to expand and improve the existing Sewage Treatment Facilities. A program has just been announced to do just this, but it is 14 years late of the legislation that drove it, and it will take an estimated 10 years to complete. We must make sure this work is expedited and fully completed to schedule.
Combined Sewage Overflows are a necessary part of the sewage system to prevent overflows or backing up into streets and housing. However, street drainage could be progressively separated as drains are modernised to channel storm waters into the river independently of sewage. London is also drastically short of drinking water. Every time it rains, it washes off the roofs of Londonand into the drains. With a little investment it could be collected and used with minimal treatment.
The R.A.T.S. petition
has collected over 400 names and some great
comments, voicing objection to the discharge
of sewage into the river. If you have not already
done so, please add your name to the list.

The water quality in the River Thames and the practice of the Sewage Treatment Works discharging into the river is in breach of European standards and regulations. Sarah Ludford M.E.P. is petitioning the European parliament to enforce these regulations to modernise and improve the facilities to prevent these practices.
