We don't like to brag... but we do put on one hell of a Learn to Row course. You'll be part of a six week intensive learning curve; from never picking up a blade, to racing down the Thames in our annual end of course finale. You'll be introduced to our club through the course with access to our Club Night, newly refurbished gym and great social scene... did we mention we have a bar for those post weekend sessions?

We've seen 100s of people come through our doors who have taken a love to our sport and we're looking for our next intake in September coming. So if you're interested in being part of something really exciting, with hard work, a new found level of fitness and a huge group of new friends, then sign up now.

What are you waiting for...?

course requirements

swim 100m

You must be able to swim 100m in light/gym clothing

Together at the Top

To start the course you must be able to attend 12 of the 14 sessions. If you are going to miss a lot of sessions it maybe difficult to pick up previous technical sessions therefore we ask that you are able to attend the majority of the course. Where possible we try to be accommodating and there maybe some cross over between the men/women courses. All we ask is that you let us know in advanced so we can try and accommodate requests (subject to availability).

We ask that participants have an average level of fitness and are used to working out once or twice per week. You will be required to carry eight and fours boats with your team mates. This will involve lifting boats on and off racks and carry them down our steps down to the water. Please take a few moments to watch the following video.

We find that sporting history is very useful on our course as you will be familiar with training and team morale. However, if you're enthusiastic to try something new, up for a challenge and can work well with others, we'd love to hear from you. There's no 'i' in team here at Putney; team mentality is crucial to performing well together.

Ultimately we're looking for members who want to not just join our course, but stay on as part of our rowing family here at Putney. We're a community who trains hard and plays hard and has a social scene to rival every club on the Tideway, but you'll find that out soon enough.

"I moved to London and wanted to join a sport to meet people. Having never rowed before, the L2R course was a great introduction to rowing and the Club's social side.
3 years later and I can't imagine life without PTRC!"

What do i need to bring/wear?

For your safety you must wear wellies for all water sessions as our steps to the water can be very slippy. Please note designer wellies such as, Hunters are not ideal as they do not have sufficient grip.  In terms of kit, the best clothing for rowing is light weight, stretchy, breathable, and fairly form-fitting. Loose clothing can get caught in the slides under the seat. Sportswear is ideal- leggings, shorts, t-shirts, jumper, waterproof jacket, towel and change of clothes. Don’t forget your trainers for land training. The kitchen is out of bounds so you may wish to bring your own drinks/snacks.

Do I need to be a club member to do the course?

Yes, you will need to be a member to attend the course. Your course fee with cover your membership fee for the duration of the course. If you decide to stay on after the course you will be required to set up a monthly payment depending on the level of membership.

What happens if it rains?

Rowing can be weather dependent. We do row in the rain therefore please bring change of kit and waterproof clothing. There are some conditions where it is unsafe to row. In these circumstances water sessions maybe cancelled and indoor technical sessions will be provided.

I've completed my learn to row, what next?

After completion of Learn to Row, there will be an end of course social to celebrate your achievements.  We trust that you have enjoyed your introduction to rowing and want to stay on and progress further with PTRC. Those who are keen and have shown the necessary commitment and required aptitude will have the opportunity to join as a member of our development squad. You will have access to club facilities and our regular social events which include Oktoberfest, Burns Night and End of Season Awards Dinner.
