OVERVIEW

Putney Town Men’s Squad is one of the most rapidly developing squads on the Tideway. Our Men have had a hugely successful summer season; prequalifying at Henley in the Performance Squad; the Masters competing in Head of the Charles; and the Development Squad competing at head races along the Tideway.

With a core of talented Performance and Masters Men alongside a flourishing Development squad, Putney Town is a fantastic club for rowers who are looking to progress their rowing career. The squad is built upon a results-driven training programme, enabling athletes to pursue demanding careers whilst also achieving success on the water.

The Performance Squad is a competitive team of athletes from all backgrounds including schoolboys, university rowers, club rowers and graduates of our own learn to row program with ambitions to place high in all races. Recent category wins include Pairs Head and Fours Head as well as Thursday's races at Henley Royal. Our squad is making some serious moves for this year’s races.

Head Coach, Tim Male, has competed for GB back in the 2000s and has set numerous world records on the erg. He joins us this season from coaching previously as Kings College London Boat Club, Tideway Scullers School and the American School London to name a few. Our training plan is designed to fit around working life and consists of a combination of weights, ergs, core, stretching and the highest technical standards on the water.

2+ Years Experience

With ages ranging from early forties to late sixties, we compete in rowing and sculling events throughout the year. The squad can be seen beyond the Tideway at British Rowing Masters Championships in Nottingham, Henley Masters and European Masters Championships. Coached by Matt Bedford (Ex GB lightweight squad), the challenge of racing successfully against other masters squads, at local and national level, remains a key goal.

Less formal crew outings occur on evenings throughout the summer. During the winter season the Masters train amongst other club squads at circuit training and yoga. Each year we take our training abroad for a week long Easter training camp in Spain and France, most recently in combination with the Masters Women’s squad.

Some of the masters are the club’s longest standing members, playing a key role in the long term development of the club. While the Masters will often be found at the member’s bar on Thursdays, we also figure prominently in the social life of the club at dinners and other social events throughout the year.

The Development Squad is a combination of the annual graduating class from our successful 'Learn to Row' programme, alongside members joining from other clubs with less than a years experience. We also welcome rowers who have taken an extended break and wish to refresh their skills before entering into our other squads.

The Squad trains together from September to July each year and we encourage our members to aspire for our senior squads.

Our training programme looks to integrate our new athletes into the Club's social and competitive atmosphere with weekly circuits, club nights and regular social events. Entering all major tideway races and hosting many a social, we have a fantastic atmosphere within our squad. If you have just finished a Learn to Row course or want to get back into rowing, then this is the squad for you!
