JOHN COMER

PRESIDENT, 1940 – 2016

Putney Town Rowing Club are saddened to announce that the club President, John Comer, passed away yesterday after a short battle with cancer.

John had a very successful rowing career with the club and has been a member of Putney Town since the 1950’s and President for more than the past 20 years. John coached many current members to row or to scull and he ‘championed’ several who set their goals high including, among others, our two recent “Olympians” Charlotte Taylor and John Collins.

Over the more than fifty years of membership, John spent periods working away from home which allowed him to experience rowing in such places as Canada, South Korea, Norway and Scotland. Wherever he went he made friends, joined a local club, coached and sculled.

As well as rowing John loved all aspects of London’s river. Not only a qualified coach and umpire, he was a member of Henley Stewards, a Member of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen, a Swan Upper for the Dyers Company and a Freeman of the City of London.

Above all he was a dear friend to many who enjoyed his company over the years. He will be sorely missed by us all but most of all by his devoted and loving family.
