Coxing & Steering the Tideway – Learning from Experience

Understanding how to steer the Tideway well is one of the biggest advantages a crew can have - whether racing or training. Knowing when to push the racing line, when to play safe, and how to read what the river is doing can make the difference between a smooth race and a stressful one.

At the end of February, members gathered in the bar for a dedicated Coxing & Steering the Tideway evening, bringing together coxes, steers and curious rowers keen to deepen their understanding of the river.

The evening was led by Rich Hill, a hugely experienced Tideway cox based at Thames with over 25 years of coxing experience. Rich shared insights from thousands of miles on the river, explaining how experienced coxes think about positioning, anticipate situations before they happen, and make decisions under pressure.

Members explored topics including:

  • Reading the Tideway – understanding the stream, pressure points and how conditions affect the racing line

  • When to push the line vs when to prioritise safety

  • Common race scenarios and how to react quickly and calmly

  • Learning from mistakes – including plenty of “we’ve all done that” moments

  • How crews can support their cox or steersperson to make better decisions

The session was interactive, with members bringing questions and sharing their own experiences from races and busy training outings. One of the key takeaways was that great coxing is about judgement and anticipation, not just memorising lines.

Events like this also highlight how much expertise exists within the Tideway community, and how valuable it is to share that knowledge across clubs and squads.

A big thank you to Rich Hill for giving up his time to come down and share his experience, and to everyone who joined the conversation.

As the racing season continues, the hope is that sessions like this will help build confidence in steering, improve safety on the river, and support the next generation of coxes and steers at the club.

Anyone interested in getting involved in coxing or learning to steer should speak to Kat or Ele – we’re always keen to grow the team. 🚣‍♀️ 🌊
